Missing Middle Publications

The Series

The Missing Middle Publication series is a collection of three books addressing the absence of middle-density, mixed-use, and affordable housing options in Metro Vancouver.

Emerging themes:

Social interaction, collectivity, affordability, innovative financing, community vitality, cooperative ownership, resiliency.

The Missing Middle Competition

The first publication recounts the winning entries of the 2018 Urbanarium Missing Middle Competition, addressing concerns of affordability and social well-being in Metro Vancouver.

Compilation of the insight and design strategies proposed by the competition entries informs the Policy Impact Proposal, in which five changes to policy allow for the proliferation of missing middle housing.

The Missing Middle Studio

The second book traces the process, teachings, and final delivery of Haeccity’s Missing Middle Studio at UBC SALA in 2021, investigating middle-density housing from an interior approach centralized on human exchange.

The diverse collection of student work explores housing paired with varying topics ranging from environmental responses like sustainability, land & food security, and sea level rise, to social interactions involving culture & craft, cooperative living, and aging in place.

The Mixing Middle Competition

The third book features the winning submissions of the 2022 Urbanarium Mixing Middle Competition, where entrants proposed new mixed-use functionality and gentle densification to low density, residential zones in Metro Vancouver.

Jury comments and possible policy impacts highlight common themes and recommendations for consideration by policy makers.
