The Brief

The proposal in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of Vancouver includes the restoration and conversion of a character home into a duplex, and the addition of a laneway infill unit. Two related families will occupy the “Character Back” and “Infill” units, which both face and benefit from a central landscaped courtyard.

The major aim of this proposal is to facilitate interaction between occupants of the Character Back and Infill units, allowing casual moments of exchange through the built and landscaped form. This is accomplished through a missing middle typology that creates more usable outdoor and amenity spaces through a more nuanced approach to setback and massing.
