The Brief
A young couple purchase this house, originally designed by Eric Cobb in a hilltop Seattle suburb, looking to start a family. The previous owner had customized the house for three teenage boys and a large dog, and the new owners were looking for a refresh that was baby (and cat) friendly.
Approach
Built into a hill, the main level containing a large open kitchen-dining-living area, hovers like a glowing lantern over the garage and service spaces below. Industrial lighting and details in this rectilinear space were softened using Herman Miller Eames “cloud” pendants to create a playful visual focal point visible from the street. An enclosed office nook was opened up to create a coffee bar and a place to display art and curios.
Bathrooms throughout the residence feature handcrafted clay tiles from Heath Ceramics.
An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was refurbished into a flexible space that could convert from the owner’s home based Qipao business by day into a guest suite by night. Features like the fabric-cutting table that can be folded down into a kitchen island were custom-designed and built. The pendant light pictured is from Canadian studio A-N-D Light’s Spotlight collection.
The upper floor was reconfigured to accommodate two kid’s bedrooms with a shared ensuite on one end, and a master suite on the other, with an open family lounge and laundry room connecting the two wings.
Special attention was paid to the master ensuite bathroom in order to give the homeowners a restorative space to retreat from busy work and family life.
Behind the double vanity, a sequence of spaces for undressing, showering, and bathing (in water, light, and vegetation) offers a spa-like experience at home.
Downstairs, the upgrades included a temperature controlled walk-in wine cellar, bar, gym, and media room.
